I walk the streets of old George Town to see the sights and to look for photo opportunities. I wish that I could get good photos of people working or playing, but I’m never in the right place at the right time. I can’t find people doing interesting jobs or playing Sepak Takraw or practicing a martial art or fishing or anything. In the cradle of Sepak Takraw, I’ve seen no one playing it. In the Philippines, I read, in the book Ghost Soldiers and elsewhere, that Manila is the “Pearl of the Orient.” In Malaysia I have read that this island, Pulau Penang is the Pearl of the Orient and references to Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Macau city-states as “The Pearl of the Orient.” Will the real Pearl of the Orient please stand up?
